This is not an ancestry kit. This is not a disease prediction. And it is definitely not another test that tells you what you already know — that you need to eat better, sleep more, and stress less.
I just want to clear that up right at the start, because when most people hear the word “genomics” or even “genetics”, one of two things happens. Either they picture a spit tube in a cardboard box and a map of where their great-grandmother came from, or they picture a clinical report full of risk percentages they are not sure they want to know.
I understand both reactions. I had them too, before I actually understood what functional genomics is — and what it is not.
What it actually is changes things. It changes how you live your life. And I mean that in the most practical, everyday, why-has-nobody-explained-this-to-me sense of the phrase.
The problem with how we talk about genes
Here is what most of us were taught, either out loud or by implication: your genes are your destiny. You inherit a certain set of traits, tendencies, and risks from your parents, and those things are largely fixed. Maybe you got your mother’s metabolism or your father’s heart. Maybe you carry a gene that makes a certain disease more likely.
The message, whether anyone meant to send it or not, was that your DNA is a sentence handed down to you. The best you can do is manage around it.
That framing has done a lot of damage. It has made people feel like passive recipients of their health rather than active participants in it. It has made genetics feel like something to fear rather than something to understand. And it has kept a genuinely useful tool out of reach for a lot of women who could have benefited from it years ago.
Functional genomics is not that. It does not predict your future. It does not tell you what diseases you will develop or how long you will live. What it does is show you how your body is wired to function right now — today — in the life you are actually living.
What “how you’re wired” actually means
Your body is running thousands of processes every single day: detoxifying, metabolizing nutrients, regulating hormones, managing inflammation, responding to stress, clearing waste. Every one of those processes is influenced by your genetics. Not determined by them. Influenced by them.
Think of it like a highway system. Two cities might be connected by roads, but the quality, capacity, and design of those roads varies enormously. Some highways move traffic efficiently. Some have bottlenecks. Some are built for heavy loads and some are not.
When traffic backs up, it does not mean the road is broken. It means the road has a specific design, and understanding that design helps you work with it instead of against it.
Your body’s pathways work the same way. One person’s detox pathway moves efficiently. Another person’s has a bottleneck that means certain exposures, certain supplements, certain foods create a backup that shows up as symptoms. Neither pathway is broken. They are just different. And when you know which one you have, you stop wondering why your body responds differently than everyone else’s.
This is why two women can follow the exact same wellness plan and have completely different results. It is not willpower. It is not effort. It is not that one of them is doing it right and the other is doing it wrong. It is design.
God wired each of us differently on purpose. When you understand your design, you stop fighting your body and start working with it.
Where epigenetics fits (without making this a science class)
If you have been around wellness for more than five minutes, you have heard the word epigenetics. Usually it gets used like a magic eraser: don’t worry about your genes, just think positive and eat kale and the switches will flip.
That is not how this works. And it is also not a reason to ignore your genetics.
Here is the simplest way I know to say it. Your genes are the wiring in the house. Epigenetics is how life uses the switches — food, sleep, stress, mold, pregnancies, infections, the season you are in, the load you have been carrying. The wiring does not change. The way it gets used does.
That is why functional genomics is not fatalism, and it is also not “genes don’t matter.” The report shows you the wiring. Your history shows you how that wiring has been asked to perform. The interpretation is where those two things meet.
You do not need a lecture on methyl groups to use this well. You need to know that your DNA is not a prison, and your lifestyle is not a personality test. They talk to each other. That conversation is the work.
What I found out at 50

I was 50 years old when I finally got my own functional genomics report, and I sat with it for a long time.
Decades of confusion started making sense. The seven miscarriages, and why no one could ever tell me why. The mold exposure that hit me so differently than it hit my husband and boys — same house, same air, four completely different symptom pictures. The anxiety that never quite fit any explanation I had been given. The way certain supplements helped some people in my community and left me feeling worse. The years I spent trying protocols I found in Facebook groups at 11 p.m. because I was desperate enough to try anything, and wondering why my results never matched the testimonials.
It was not random. It was never random. I just did not have the right lens until then.
What I found in that report was not a list of things wrong with me. It was a map of how I am actually built. And that map changed not just how I support my own health, but how I understand and extend grace to the people I love most. When I saw my husband’s report and my boys’ reports, I stopped being frustrated by the ways we respond differently to the same things. I started understanding them instead.
That shift — from frustration to understanding — is one of the most underrated gifts this kind of work offers.
What Your Design Code actually looks at
Your Design Code is the functional genomics blueprint I use with the women (and families) I work with. It is not a diagnosis. It is not a life sentence. It does not tell you what will happen to you, and it does not replace a good practitioner, your own lived experience, or the context of your actual life.
What it does is give you a clearer picture of how your body tends to process stress, nutrients, hormones, and environmental exposures — so the choices you make are actually calibrated to you.
In plain language, we are looking at patterns like:
- how your detox pathways tend to handle the load they are given
- how you process B vitamins, folate, and other nutrients that fuel those pathways
- how stress, sleep, and mood chemistry tend to run in your body
- how hormone pathways clear — or back up
- how inflammation and metabolic response tend to show up for you
We do not read isolated letters on a page and call that a plan. We read pathways, then we set them next to your real life.
When I describe it to people, I often say it this way: your body came with a manual. The problem is that most of us were never handed it, so we have spent years borrowing someone else’s and wondering why the results do not match.
For a woman who has spent years trying to figure out why she still feels off despite doing everything right, that is not just useful. It is a relief.

An ancestry test tells you where your people came from. A disease-risk report tries to tell you what might happen later. Functional genomics is asking a different question: how is this body built to handle food, stress, hormones, sleep, and toxins in the life you are living now?
Your genes are not your destiny. A variant that affects how your body clears certain toxins does not mean you are doomed to feel terrible. It means you have information. It means you can make choices that actually fit your biology instead of choices designed for the average person — who may be wired very differently than you are.
Understanding your design is an act of stewardship, not fear. It is how you stop guessing and start living in a way that actually makes sense for the body you were given.
Not more effort. More clarity.

You do not need to memorize SNPs while you wait. You also do not need another protocol from a group thread.
- Write down what has helped, what did nothing, and what made you feel worse.
- Notice patterns in energy, sleep, mood, and cycles. That is data, not proof you failed.
- When the report arrives, we will read pathways — not isolated letters on a page.
The waiting month is for getting ready to understand your own map. Not for collecting someone else’s.

Can I just upload an old 23andMe file?
That file can be interesting. It is not the same test, and it is not what I interpret for Your Design Code. If you already have consumer raw data, keep it. We still start with the blueprint built for this work.
Doesn’t epigenetics mean my genes don’t really matter?
No. Epigenetics means your life talks to your wiring. It does not mean the wiring is imaginary. The report shows the design. Your history shows the load. You need both.
Will this tell me what diseases I will get?
No. That is not the point, and it is not what Your Design Code is for. It does not predict your future. It helps you steward the body you have now.
If my genes don’t change, why does a report still matter?
Because your DNA is the wiring, not the whole story. The report does not change. Your life does. Once you can see the pathways, food, supplements, stress, and exposures stop being a random experiment.
