You got the labs back. And guess what? Everything looks “normal.” Sigh.
Because you still feel exhausted. Your brain is foggy, your hormones feel off, and your body is reacting to things it never used to react to. The doctor says you’re fine, says your labs are “within range”, and you’re standing in the parking lot wondering if you’re losing your mind.
You are not losing your mind. And your labs are not lying. They’re just answering a different question than the one your body is actually asking.

Standard lab work is a snapshot. It shows you what is happening in your body right now — today — at the moment the blood was drawn. It can tell you whether your thyroid hormone is in range, whether your iron is low, whether your blood sugar is elevated. Now standard lab ranges are not what they should be, but that’s a conversation for a different day. The point is, your lab information does matter.
But a snapshot cannot tell you why your body keeps ending up in the same place. And it cannot tell you why you respond so differently than someone else with the same labs and the same plan.
That is where functional genomics comes in. Your genes are not a snapshot, because they do not change. They are the wiring behind the snapshot. And when you understand the wiring, the picture on the lab printout finally starts to make sense.

Methylation is one of those words that sounds intimidating until someone explains what it actually does — and then a lot of “I feel crazy” moments start lining up.
It is a process your body runs constantly. It helps you detoxify, regulate mood, repair DNA, process hormones, and manage inflammation. Think of it like a behind-the-scenes maintenance crew. When that crew is keeping up, you feel it even if you cannot name it. When it is sluggish, you feel that too.
This is where MTHFR usually enters the conversation. It is the variant people have heard of, and it is only one piece of a much bigger pathway. Women with certain methylation patterns often find that a standard B-complex does not do what the bottle promised. Or they feel worse on folic acid instead of better. Or they have been told their B12 looks fine on paper while they still feel depleted and foggy.
Your labs can tell you your B12 level. They cannot tell you whether your body is actually able to use it. This is when our genes can point to that part of the story.
2. How your body handles detoxification
Your liver runs a two-phase detox process every day, clearing hormones, environmental chemicals, medications, and metabolic waste. Phase one breaks things down. Phase two packages them up and moves them out. Both phases depend on enzymes, and those enzymes are influenced by your genetics.
Some women have a pattern that makes phase one run fast and phase two run slow. The result is a pile-up of half-finished work. It is like a recycling facility that sorts everything quickly and then runs out of boxes. The sorted material sits there and starts causing problems.
This is one reason the same exposure — mold, fragrance, pesticides, a medication that “everyone takes just fine” — can hit two women so differently. It is not drama. It is not weakness. It is a detox pathway with a specific design.
Your labs can show that something is off right now. They cannot show you the capacity of the pathway that keeps getting asked to handle the load.
3. How you clear hormones
“Estrogen dominance” gets thrown around a lot in the world of female hormones. What gets talked about less is hormone clearance: how efficiently your body breaks down and eliminates estrogen once it has done its job. That clearance is influenced by your genetics.
Certain patterns affect how quickly estrogen is metabolized and which road it travels on the way out. Some roads produce byproducts that are relatively quiet. Others produce byproducts that are more reactive. Your labs can tell you an estrogen number. They cannot tell you which road that estrogen is taking.
For women dealing with PMS, heavy cycles, breast tenderness, fibroids, or weight that parks itself in the same place no matter how “clean” the plan is, this piece can be clarifying. Not because it hands you a diagnosis. Because it explains why the protocol that settled your friend left you more swollen, more tender, or more wired.
4. How your brain tends to handle stress chemistry
Mood, anxiety, focus, sleep, motivation — these are not only emotional. They are also biochemical. Your genetics play a real role in how your brain tends to make and clear the chemistry behind them.
Take COMT as one example, not as a label. It influences how quickly your brain clears dopamine and estrogen. A slower pattern often shows up as a woman who is capable, detail-oriented, and deeply affected by stress. She can also tip into rumination and overwhelm more easily, especially when hormones are shifting.
Other pathways influence how serotonin and dopamine get broken down. That can shape stress resilience and how your body responds to certain foods and supplements. None of this is a personality verdict. It is not “you are an anxious person.” It is a map of how the chemistry tends to run — which means you can stop treating your nervous system like a character flaw.
A woman who has spent years wondering why she feels so much more amped than her friends, or why the first thing she tried for mood never quite fit, sometimes finds more clarity in seeing the wiring than in another round of guessing.
5. What tends to light up your inflammation
Inflammation sits underneath a lot of the symptoms women bring to me: fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, skin flares, gut issues, mood that swings for “no reason.” Those are not always five separate problems. They are often the same fire showing up in different rooms.
Your genes influence how your immune system mounts a response and how quickly it stands down. Some patterns make that response faster and stronger — which is protective in a short burst and miserable when it does not turn off. The same input that barely registers for your sister can keep you inflamed for days.
Knowing that tendency does not mean you are destined for chronic illness. It means you can see which inputs — food, stress, poor sleep, a water-damaged house — are most likely to tip your system. That is a very different kind of information than a single CRP number from a Tuesday morning blood draw.
These are just the headlines… the report goes much further.
These five are some of the biggest, most life-explaining pathways I see in the women I work with. But your genes are telling a much fuller story than this.
Methylation, detox, hormones, neurotransmitters, inflammation — these are the headlines. Your actual report goes deeper: immune function, nutrient absorption, stress response, sleep architecture, and more. Every layer adds to the picture. Every piece helps explain something that felt random before because everything is connected.
That is the point of seeing the whole map instead of one lab number at a time. Not more data for the sake of data. A fuller story of a body that was never actually random.

Labs tell you where you are. Genes tell you how you tend to get there — and why you keep returning to the same place.
Both matter, and it’s important to note they are not competing. A good practitioner still wants current labs. Functional genomics does not replace them.
But for the women I work with — the ones who have done everything right and still feel like their body is not cooperating — the missing piece is almost never another panel. It is understanding the design that keeps producing the same snapshot.
